Advanced & affordable consumer night vision system
eMagin, a leader in OLED Micro Displays and a company at the forefront of the Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) revolution, approached PDD to help them create a high resolution consumer night vision smartphone attachment, a ‘first of its kind’ that would encase eMagin’s advanced technology while being affordable to the everyday consumer; a great entry point into the world of Night Vision.
The challenge for PDD was to create an ergonomic, aesthetically pleasing, adjustable (to fit different sized Android™phones) and user-friendly housing for eMagin’s electrical components in a very short time frame.
PDD built the unit from ground up, which included ideation sketches, ergonomic mock-ups for validation, 3D design, accurate mock-ups for further validation, preliminary engineering validation of workshop mock-ups and final engineering.
PDD’s approach and heritage meant that we could provide a complete end-to-end service package that brought together a diverse and global talent pool of designers, developers and engineers. Our cross pollination of capabilities, ability to communicate quickly and being in full control of all major aspects of the product before manufacturing lead to a very efficient work process and we were able to deliver to the clients very tight deadline.
Moreover, having working studios in Asia was significant to the success of the project. We were able to hit the client’s tight deadline and execute actions swiftly by having face-to-face meetings with key stakeholders and vendors who were based in China.
The outcome is the world’s first high quality consumer focused night vision system – BlazeSpark™. The smartphone attachment allows consumers to see clearly high-resolution images and videos in the dark by inserting their Android™ smartphone into a revolutionary case that displays what the night vision sensor is seeing and sharing it all with the Blaze community anywhere online. The BlazeSpark™ app can be downloaded from Google Play™, which then allows the users to share their experience worldwide, record, chat and live stream content within the BlazeSpark™ network or to other social media sites.
