Design helps compliance with needlesafe legislation
The risk of infection from serious blood-borne infections, such as Hepatitis B and C and HIV arising from needle-stick injuries is a critical concern for healthcare workers. So great is this risk that as of May 2013, Member States of the European Union have created new legislation based on the European Council 2010/32/EU Directive on the Prevention of Sharps Injuries.
Infutech, a developer of drug infusion systems, had the foresight ahead of this legislation to address the risks associated with the retraction of a long, blood-tainted needle following the placement of a catheter for subcutaneous infusion.
With ease-of-use needed for healthcare workers and patients alike and the need for comfort, PDD was commissioned to develop a product that navigated existing patents within tight commercial constraints. Our expertise, creativity and experience came into play to overcome the unique functional, ergonomic, material compatibility and sterilisation challenges associated such devices. The result is a compact, patented design (Saflo™) that encases the long needle throughout the insertion and extraction procedure – a solution which is resulting in significant commercial interest following its market introduction at Medica – Germany.
