PDD is delighted to announce that Tom Hamilton, Consultant – Technical Design, has been awarded the Young Designer of the Year at the Plastics Industry Awards 2014 for his Zebro Leg Split design.

Comedian Al Murray presented the award to Tom in front of an audience of 800 people at the London Hilton on Park Lane. Tom beat off stiff competition to receive the hotly contested prize by designing an innovative emergency leg splint for immobilising leg injuries in mountain rescue type situations. It was primarily designed for mountain/cave rescue teams but has application in a number of different areas including sports field injuries and military. Some of its key features are; radio transparency so it can stay on the patient’s leg whilst they are having scans, quick release ratcheting dial and cable system for tightening and lightweight reusable design.

“I was honoured to receive the award especially when up against some strong competition. It is great that young designers are given this sort of push early on and hopefully I can challenge in one of the other categories later on in my career,” Tom said after receiving his prestigious award.

Now in their fourteenth year, the Plastics Industry Awards highlight and recognise the best that the innovative UK plastics industry has to offer with 17 categories covering materials usage, product design, manufacturing, training and environmental performance.
